Legal Lessons Week 7 - What Is My Case Worth?
Dear Attorney Norton,
I was in an accident and went to the emergency room. I also treated with a chiropractor and got physical therapy. Can you tell me what my case is worth?
- Wondering About the Value
Dear Wondering About the Value,
This is probably the number one question that people ask an attorney. As a personal injury attorney for over 25 years, I could likely give you a value for your case but would need much more information. It is nearly impossible to place a value on a personal injury claim, or wrongful death case, without a thorough discussion about your specific circumstances. Some of the factors that can affect the value of your case include: who is at fault in the collision if liability is disputed, medical bills, the type, and length of your treatment, the severity of the crash, whether you had prior medical conditions or treatment, loss of income, scarring or disfigurement, and the extent of your pain and suffering.
Most personal injury law firms will provide you with a free initial meeting. You should also find a lawyer who will not make you pay costs upfront and that will work on a percentage fee basis. This means that you will not owe an attorney fee until a recovery is obtained for you.
